The Omegas: The Essential Fats Your Body Needs

Did you know there are certain fats that are necessary for our health? Some essential fats like Omega-3s and Omega-6s help us build and maintain a healthy body. The problem — modern diets usually consist of more Omega-6s than Omega-3s, which means you’re more than likely missing out on essential fatty acids!

What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fats full of double bonds; the last double bond is three carbon atoms from the omega end of the fatty acid molecule. They are “essential” fats because our bodies can’t produce them, so for a healthy functioning body, it’s essential we consume them. How essential? Studies have found that having low levels of Omega-3s in your red blood cells leads to a similar reduction in life expectancy as smoking cigarettes!

How are Omega-6s Different?

While Omega-6s are also polyunsaturated, the last double bond is six carbon atoms from the omega end of the fatty acid molecule instead of three. They are also essential fatty acids, but they are significantly easier to get into your diet than Omega-3s; they are found in more foods and larger quantities — up to ten times more in a similar serving!

There are two main functions of Omega-6 fatty acids, to provide energy and increase inflammation.. Inflammation may sound bad, but our bodies rely on it for certain things like exercise gains and fighting off acute illness, but when inflammation becomes chronic, it can be associated with health problems, like cardiac, metabolic, and autoimmune issues.

Having both types of these fatty acids in your diet is essential, but like anything else, balance is the key!

A simple finger-prick blood test from a reputable testing company is the best way to determine your Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio.

To help you live the best version of yourself, Reclaim Wellness & Beauty is offering complimentary Omega fatty acid testing for all new patients through the end of October!
