While Omega-6s are also polyunsaturated, the last double bond is six carbon atoms from the omega end of the fatty acid molecule instead of three. They are also essential fatty acids, but they are significantly easier to get into your diet than Omega-3s; they are found in more foods and larger quantities — up to ten times more in a similar serving!
There are two main functions of Omega-6 fatty acids, to provide energy and increase inflammation.. Inflammation may sound bad, but our bodies rely on it for certain things like exercise gains and fighting off acute illness, but when inflammation becomes chronic, it can be associated with health problems, like cardiac, metabolic, and autoimmune issues.
Having both types of these fatty acids in your diet is essential, but like anything else, balance is the key!
